IS YOUR HOME (OR JOB) MAKING YOU SICK ?

Lung experts say your house could be making you sick.  For children with asthma, this is no joking matter. Asthma affects more than 20 million people in the United States, including about 6 million children.  This lung disease sends more than 2 million people to the emergency room with life threatening asthma attacks each year.  Contaminants, pollutants and other allergens in homes can make asthma worse.

MOLD:   Mold is everywhere.  This living organism is amazingly successful at finding the right environment to thrive.  Moisture and warmth are all it needs to get a foothold in a home, and once it's there it's very difficult to get rid of. Once mold has found a good place to grow, it sends out millions of tiny spores into the air.  These spores are invisible to the naked eye, but the human immune system certainly knows it's there.  Molds produce allergens, irritants, and in some cases, toxins.  Many people will have an allergic reaction to mold.  It can also irritate eyes, skin, and lungs of people sensitive to mold.  One study found children who loved in homes where mold could be found were twice as likely to have asthma attacks as children who did not have mold in their homes.

MOLD ALLERGY  SYMPTOMS

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/mold-allergy/DS00773  Mold allergy causes the same signs and symptoms that occur in other types of upper respiratory allergies. Mold allergy symptoms can include:

  • Sneezing
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Cough and postnasal drip
  • Itchy eyes, nose and throat
  • Watery eyes
  • Sinusitis, an inflammation of the sinuses

Mold allergy symptoms vary from person to person, and range from mild to severe. You may have year-round symptoms or symptoms that flare up only during certain times of the year.  You may notice symptoms when the weather is damp, or you're in indoor or outdoor spaces that have high concentrations of mold.

  • If you have a mold allergy and asthma, your asthma symptoms may be triggered by exposure to mold spores. In some people, exposure to certain molds can cause a severe asthma attack. Signs and symptoms of asthma include:

    • Coughing
    • Wheezing
    • Shortness of breath

When to see a doctor :
If you have a stuffy nose, sneezing, watery eyes or other bothersome symptoms for longer than two weeks, see your doctor.

Your doctor will consider your symptoms and may order tests to try to determine if you have allergies or whether your symptoms are caused by something else.
